View Full Version : Something's been bugging me with Vista...
Is there any particular reason that Microsoft made it so when you go to start and hit the power symbol it only puts your computer into sleep? I just noticed this yesterday after it caused my computer to Blue Screen. And is there any way to make it shut itself off instead of going into sleep? Like when hitting the power symbol it shuts off instead of sleep because I'm not going to remember to hit the little upside down triangle above the power symbol every time for the list of "Shut Down, restart, Standby, logout"

I found this really annoying too, when I used Vista for a while.
To change it, go to Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Power Options.
Then click "Change plan settings" on the power plan you're currently using, then click on Change advanced power settings.
Expand Power buttons and lid options, then Start menu power button options.
In the “Setting” drop down list, you can change the default option to whatever you like, in this case Shut Down.
I think the reason MS did this was to make Vista seem faster - the average user won't change this, and will think "wow, that was a quick shutdown" and hen "wow, that was a quick boot" when it's actually just resuming from sleep mode, which is much faster but not a full shutdown.
Hope this helps.
lol. Wow, now that's just stupid IMO. Thanks Calum, I'll try it as soon as I get home.

thanks for the walkthrough there. This had been a minor nuisance for me with my laptop; sleep mode, after all, has a habit of consuming more battery power then being OFF like I had asked it to...
I probably could have found it myself, but I am like all programmers; inherently lazy.
What I had been doing to shut down my laptop was a quick windows-key D to show the desktop, and then Alt+f4, down arrow twice, and enter.
Actually, come to think of it, that is probably faster then going start->Shutdown...

I just hit the power button ... much easier.
Then if I need to reboot, Start - Shut Down is preset to that.
Although, my power button is slightly broken, I have to press it carefully ir it gets stuck - totally my fault.
Anyway, glad you found it useful BC.

That is a good bit of information. Thanks for that, Calum.

I just created a shutdown shortcut on my desktop a simple -s -t 10 -c system application. Works a treat and I even added a goodbye message at the end.
