Power-up your Application with free ActiveX Controls

Namely, I mean, Visual Basic 6 Applications. The problem is, of course, that the Microsoft Included controls simply don't do their job anymore.

Why not?

The reason the ActiveX Controls, as included with Visual Basic 6, simply don't cut it should be obvious- they are nearly ten years old. They don't support nearly any of the new features that users have come to expect, such as icons with alpha, or even basic XP styles. This is omitting a glaring flaw- the Visual Basic...

Is microsoft putting subliminal messages in their functions?

Posted 03-24-2009 at 05:43 PM by BC_Programming (BC_Programming's Blog)

I realized while I was working on some of my Shell code some interesting Naming conventions with several elements of the Windows API. The first item I have worked with for a long time, but perhaps because I aliased it I never saw the subliminal message:

S***EMID

I have blocked out the dirty bit for the children who inevitably read my blog right after finishing their fruit loops.

Now, you or me read that as ess-h Item ID, but some people with more perverse...

On Alternate Data streams: Part 1

Since version 3.1, The NTFS filesystem has supported something known as "Alternate Data streams".

The most basic definition of a file is as a stream of bytes with a name, and is essentially what FAT and FAT32 use to reference files, a name and a pointer to that files first cluster.

Alternate Data streams came about out of necessity, surprisingly enough, when faced with networking Mac and NT PCs, Microsoft was faced with the issue of file sharing. Copying a...

malware- it finally got me!

As I've exhaustingly made known in various discussions, I don't use a Anti-virus program, and generally notice odd behaviour of files and unknown tasks, and malware is usually short-lived when it manages to get on my computer. Usually through a trojan, since that's the most effective vector of attack... especially against me.

In any case, about a week ago, I noticed an extra rundll32 running in my task manager (sad isn't it, when somebody can identify a single extra task running...)......

The triple boot laptop experiment

Posted 01-26-2009 at 12:23 PM by BC_Programming (BC_Programming's Blog)

Recently, I purchased a new laptop for myself, a Toshiba Satellite L300:

Intel Pentium(R) Dual CPU T3200 @ 2.00 Ghz (64-Bit)
4GB RAM
1280x800 TFT LCD display
Intel GMA
RealTek audio
Wireless-N
250GB HD

Great machine- I'll say that. But being a closet skeptic as far as Vista performance is concerned, I decided to see how XP fared in this machine, compared to Vista. Since I was reformatting the machine to Install Vista Ultimate...
